Why I Live Here #1: Sunrise

The colors in these shots are not augmented or exaggerated, I promise.  Coastal Maine is simply a beautiful place to watch the sun come up.  That first shot was taken this morning on the Eastern Promenade in Portland, looking out towards Peaks Island (where we lived in the Fall of 2009).   The rest of the shots are of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth.  I have lived many, many places, and there's nowhere else that makes me feel the joy that I do when I sit on a big, craggy rock by the sea, watching the sun take its sweet time to rise over Casco Bay.

  2. I grew up in Cape Elizabeth, and I miss being so close to the coast. The beauty of your pictures took me right back there. And made me cry.

  4. Oh Gigi....it's been too long and now that I finally find my way here, so long overdue and tardy, I find myself swept away and wondering how, HOW, this happened.

Stunning sunrise, beautiful photos, and a heartfelt sentiment.

I do believe some day I will visit you. Some day.... <3

  6. Oh Gigi, there are just no words! I have never been to Maine, but it has been on my list of places to visit for several years now. When, would you say, is the best time of year to experience it?

    Beautiful post!

  7. Thanks for the lovely comments, my friends!

Marion, I grew up in Bath, and I lived away from the coast for many years, so I know exactly what you mean.

Jane, I probably should have worn my sunglasses to take these! I had spots in my eyes when I was done.

Ciara, whether I visit you or you me, I know we'll meet one day. x

Keri, I love Maine all year round, but I think October and June are my favorite months here. October for the foliage and beautiful weather, and June for the gorgeous green and blooms--plus it's just before peak tourist season!

  12. Greetings from the other Portland. I wish it were on the ocean front, so we could watch the sunsets. We must drive about 1 1/2 hours to get to the sea. Your photos are amazing. I just love, love lighthouses. I can just imagine what a joy it is to live by the sea.
