Muted New York

The Chrysler Building
Mr. Magpie and I spent last week in New York City, and I decided to take a break from the internet as much as possible while we were gone, which meant much more time for walking, thinking, taking pictures, and, of course, eating delicious food.

We stayed at the apartment of wonderful friends on the Upper East Side.  I much prefer this to staying in a hotel, as it provides a home base from which to explore.  On this trip it helped me get to know Manhattan much better than ever before. I also spent a full day with my cousin, his wife, and their son, who live in Brooklyn, and they introduced me to fabulous restaurants and sights I never would have found on my own.

Most importantly, Mr. M. and I both got to know the NYC subway system quite well, so I now feel at ease finding my way around, which makes for much more exciting adventures!  While he is holed away in the library doing research, I get to go exploring places I have always wanted to visit.  I'll have some very colorful photos to show you of sights off the beaten tourist track, but for today, I thought I'd share a few of the more muted shots from the trip.  It was quite stormy, cold, and dark for most of the week, and these photos reflect that, especially the ones taken from the Staten Island Ferry.  I know most of us imagine seeing the Statue of Liberty in a clear blue day, but there is something quite beautiful about seeing her in the middle of a very messy snow/sleet/rain storm.  Mr. M. had family who came to the United States by way of Ellis Island, so I think it was especially moving for him.

  3. Visiting New York when it is snowing is magical as everything is transformed. I remember coming out of a favorite restaurant, Prune, and being astonished to see how the snow had settled while we were eating inside and someone had built a small snowman in the little park area in front. We also went to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and it was a photographer's dream with the snow nestling on the sculptures dotted around the grounds.
I love your new house by the way.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Lynn! I agree with you about snow in New York. Unfortunately, this was more sharp, biting sleet, ice, and rain, so it was lousy to walk in, but it still made things look beautiful for an hour or so. I love your story about coming out of Prune to discover a winter wonderland. That's a perfect memory!

  4. Hi Gigi,
I want to visit New York in gray weather someday. Your photos confirm it. I have been there, as you said, when the skies were blue, and it is wonderful, but seeing it in this light is really fascinating. I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your discoveries!

    xo,
    Keri

  5. A place I've never been, but would love to wander, if only to take photographs. I'm craving newness... unfamiliar sights to fill my eyes and heart. It sounds as though you are on a new and different road these days. Despite the snow and grey, I hope you are having a most wonderful adventure! xo

  6. Great photos!
I had to smile when I read your comment on your next house. That is exactly how I think. Years ago after we bought our first house my husband was sitting in "his" chair thinking life was good and I can just sit here forever, then I said something about "our next house" and he was in shock. One day I would love to explore this part of the world more. Thanks for the tease.

  7. These photos are gorgeous! and I enjoyed traveling with you thru Instagram too:)

I loved visiting my daughter when she lived in Brooklyn...she always planned new activities and restaurants for each visit (we paid of course:) She has gotten very tired of hearing me say I miss it though so I keep quiet:)

  9. Thoroughly enjoyed catching up here, Gigi. I've only been to NY once, when I was 11, and have always longed to go back.
Your photos are beautiful, as ever, and I especially love the one 'On the ferry', and the ones of the Statue of Liberty. So atmospheric, and with Ellis Island in mind, yes, incredibly moving.
