Josh Ritter - Golden Age Of Radio

I have been away for a whole week! I'm never away for this long. I've missed you.

Tonight Mr. Magpie and I are going on a real date: a concert! Not just any concert, though, we're going to see Josh Ritter, my very favorite songwriter, at the Orpheum. We've been fans of Josh Ritter since the very early days of his career. Do you have any musicians or artists like that? You know, the ones you feel a little bit protective of? You want them to be successful, but as their fame grows you resent the "new" fans just a wee bit? It's not very grown-up of me, but I feel this way about Josh.

At the same time, I adore all of you, so I thought I'd share a clip of him here. I'll be around to visit you over the weekend. Can't wait to catch up with your lives and thoughts and goings on! xo Gigi

  1. My beloved Josh Ritter! I've often seen him play, ever since I was a young slip of a girl, and it's always a super night out. My very favourites are Harrisburg, full of gloomy cheer, and the wonderfully exuberant Drive You Back Home Kathleen with its magnificent swing and run-on lines. Have a lovely time!

  2. Those are some of my favorites, too, Mise! Why am I not surprised one bit that you love him, too?! You know, he's much more popular in Ireland than he is in the U.S. When I mention him to people here, they usually look at me blankly.

The first time I ever saw him live was at the Newport Folk Festival, where I also saw Bob Dylan and a whole slew of other famous peeps, but the person I most wanted to see was Josh. He played in the morning on this tiny stage over in one corner of the festival, and there were about 20 of us in the audience. He didn't seem to mind one bit. In fact, he did the most amazing version of Harrisburg I've ever heard him perform. It was a steaming hot day, but that song gave me the chills! I just love him.

  5. Well, I wasn't there for the start of his career, but I've followed Leonard Cohen for years and years. I've seen him three times, each one better than the last.

    Have a wonderful time!

  6. I know exactly what you mean Gigi...not wanting to share something I love so much because I want it to be just mine...I have to talk myself into remembering that shared joys are even more fun....

As for Josh Ritter, I have loved him for some time...first heard him on NPR then discovered that my daughter Ms O actually met him during a semester abroad...friend of a friend in Edinburgh...she says he was VERY nice:)

  10. Hi, friends! Thanks for your comments. It was a great show! He played for two and a half hours, plus the opening band, Punch Brothers, were amazing, too. I fell asleep with Josh Ritter songs running through my head. I couldn't ask for a better night.

  20. HaHa...at first I thought it said John Ritter.
(I once asked a young co-worker if she wanted an extra Bob Dylan concert ticket I had and she said "Does he sing 'Rocky Mountain High'?

I enjoy being turned on to music new to me, and have found quite a few interesting ones from fellow bloggers. Thanks for sharing.
