Great Meadow

Even though it doesn't feel like summer here in New England yet this year, the cattails have grown tall at Great Meadow, and the marsh wrens are safe from view aside from occasional glimpses through the reeds.  The wildflowers and berries are bursting after all the rain, and the water snakes are everywhere.  I imagine that this is a happy summer for them.

Todd spent some time with a mouse today who worked very hard to nibble off a flower stalk to bring back to his home.  He even leapt up and swung on it to make the final snap of the stem, then rushed off through the thicket, glancing back at Todd as if to say, "No way, buddy.  This is mine."  I, meanwhile, spent some time with a family of ducks who seemed content to let me stay beside them on the water's edge as long as I kept quiet and let them preen in peace before their afternoon nap.  Lucky me.

  1. I lived in New England when my children were young. Those are my fondest summer memories! You've shared some great photos. Is that a snake I see?

  4. Hi, Deidra--Yes, it's a little snake. There are loads and loads of big black water snakes there, too. The black ones scare me a bit (I nearly stepped on one today, and I think I scared him, too), but the little yellow ones are pretty.
Thanks for the lovely comments, lejarden girl and Melissa! I always love it when you stop by.

  6. Wow...these are great photos...I love ducks but not quite so fond of snakes (thank goodness St Patrick banished them all from Ireland!?!). I just spotted on your profile that one of your favourite books is Magic Mountain...I so loved that book and completely forgot about it when compiling my favourites (too hard)...read it many, many years ago. Have a lovely weekend...yay for Fridays!
